FINALIST FOCUS
Fleet Feet Charleston/Mt. Pleasant
Two locations in Summerville, SC; Mount Pleasant, SC;
Charleston, SC
fleetfeet.com/s/mountpleasant
Key Personnel: Co-Owners Chris and Amy Minkel; Wade Wiley, Co-Owner and General Manager; Eryn Groh, Area Manager; Sarah Harriman, Area Manager
History: The flagship location in Mt. Pleasant, SC, opened in March 2013. The need for a second location was quickly recognized and the owners chose to open a location in downtown Summerville in August 2015. With the rapid growth in the Summerville area, another expansion opportunity arose for the Carnes Crossroads location in August 2021. As the population in the area continued to increase over the next few years, a fourth location in West Ashley provided another option for existing customers and to attract new customers as well. The team celebrated two years in West Ashley in November.
In Their Words: “We continue to strive to be a place where everyone feels welcome, special and valued. From our continued focus on curating the best customer experience possible – to our commitment to our team to maintain our internal culture of putting people first – our commitment to prioritizing people in everything we do helps us stand out in the retail space. Almost every product in our store can be purchased elsewhere, but what keeps people coming back is how we make them feel.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This achievement is particularly meaningful because it reflects the hard work, dedication, and passion of our entire team. Over the years, we’ve worked tirelessly to build a strong, customer-focused culture while fostering a workplace that values mentorship, inclusivity and community involvement. What makes this accomplishment even more special is that it comes during a time when we have been experiencing significant ‘growing pains,’ including changes that better align our policies with our values and enhance the experience for both our team and customers. This recognition not only highlights our commitment to excellence in customer service but also validates the positive impact we have on our community. We’re proud of how far we’ve come and this accomplishment serves as a reminder of the power of working together as a team to create something truly special.”
2026 Plans: “With the current economic challenges we are all facing, 2026 is going to be focused on working as a team to come up with creative ways to continue to connect with and support our local community. Refocusing on grassroots efforts, coupled with leveraging evolving technology to let people know who we are and how we can help them get moving and stay moving in comfort and style.”

History: Point 2 was founded in May 2011 in a modest shop that was formerly a Ritz Camera store. This family-owned business (Glenn and Andrea are father and daughter) quickly became rooted in the local running community. As the team and customer base grew, so did the opportunity to serve more runners and walkers. In the fall of 2015, Point 2 moved into a larger, more dynamic location and in the summer of 2019, the business expanded again with a second store in Chesapeake, VA.
In Their Words: “At the heart of everything we do is a genuine desire to serve and uplift our community. Each year, we partner with three non-profits to raise funds and awareness, recently surpassing $50,000 in lifetime community giving. We’re especially proud of our ongoing partnership with An Achievable Dream, through which we provide new and gently used shoes to students from elementary through high school, helping ensure every child has access to quality footwear whether or not they shop with us.”

Our goal remains the same: to keep growing and serving as many people as possible in our community to help them reach their next Point 2.”
FINALIST FOCUS
SOLE SPORTS RUNNING ZONE
Five locations in Arizona: Tempe, Scottsdale, Arcadia, Phoenix, Gilbert
solesportsrunning.com and therunnersden.com
Key Personnel: Karen McDonnell and Lance Muzslay, Owners; Sean McManus, General Manager
History: Founded in 2007, Sole Sports has been serving the Phoenix Valley for 18 years. The business has grown from two doors to a five-store operation, most recently acquiring Runner’s Den (a 45-year-old store), and then opening a new location, both in 2024.
In Their Words: “Phoenix is a hotbed for recreation, a healthy lifestyle and tourism. Because of this, Sole Sports serves a wide variety of customers and each location has its own unique personality. The Tempe and Runner’s Den locations serve the ‘locals’ and multi-generational working-class families of Phoenix; the Arcadia and Scottsdale stores serve the tourist crowds; and the Gilbert location welcomes all the new young families to the Valley.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This award is recognition for all the hard work the team puts in every day to best serve our community. It validates that we are doing things the right way and that we are making a positive impact in our industry. We are extremely grateful for the partnerships we have with other store owners and of course our vendor partners who support all of our community efforts.”
2026 Plans: “Every year our team comes up with a word or phrase to help us guide our decision making and operations. This year, we have two words that we really like: Elevate and Intention. After two years of expansion and growth we will look to elevate all the new things we are doing instead of adding more. How do we refine and make better what we have built? That’s the question we hope to answer. Intention: Let’s make sure that everything we do has a purpose. It might not yield a sale right away, but is it worth our time and effort? Does it align with our core values? Does it better serve the customer, our staff and ourselves? These are the words we will live by in 2026.”

Located in downtown historic Bethlehem, the shop has become a fixture in the local running and walking community. Sheena and Andy Wells have both worked at Aardvark for more than 13 years and officially became the new owners in January 2025. As a team, they are continuing the shop’s mission: to improve lives and build community through movement.
In Their Words: “Aardvark blends expertise, professionalism and just the right amount of fun. Our team doesn’t just sell shoes; we build relationships. We’re known for thoughtful, honest fittings, a welcoming vibe and an ability to meet every customer where they are, from first-time walkers to veteran ultrarunners. What truly sets us apart, though, is the way we bring movement to life. We host a variety of events, partner with local races and non-profits, and aren’t afraid to lean into fun, like our mascot Aandy the Aardvark, who dances at finish lines, surprises customers in-store and reminds everyone that running doesn’t have to be so serious. Whether it’s a themed run, trail takeover or community cheer station, Aardvark shows up with energy, inclusion and joy.”
What the Award Means to Them: “We’re incredibly honored. This recognition shines a light on the energy, care and consistency our team brings to the sales floor and community every day. It reflects the hard work happening behind the scenes and the genuine relationships our staff has built with customers who’ve supported Aardvark through every season of growth and change. That loyalty doesn’t come by chance; it’s the result of the time, heart and attention our team gives to every person who walks through the door. Many of those customers have become part of the Aardvark family, returning year after year, sharing their experiences with others and sometimes even ending up becoming some of our most valued staff members. We’re proud to be part of a national community of run specialty stores making a difference. This award reminds us to keep showing up with purpose, passion, and gratitude.”
2026 Plans: “We’ll continue growing our community through partnerships with local races, neighborhood initiatives and events that invite everyone to move with confidence and joy. Beyond running and walking, we’re also creating more ways for people to get involved, from stream cleanups to collaborative projects that give back and connect those who simply love where they live. We’re investing in our team, our storytelling and our space. You’ll be seeing our mascot, Aandy, out and about more often, along with our new community joy mobile, the “Vark Wagon,” a blue Volkswagen ID. Buzz that will bring the Aardvark spirit wherever we go and connect with our community like no other store. Aardvark has been our happy place for nearly 14 years and it’s become one of our life’s callings to share that joy and experience with others.”
BIG PEACH RUNNING COMPANY
Thirteen locations in Georgia and Florida
BigPeachRunningCo.com
Key Personnel: Mike Cosentino, Chief Running Officer; Fernando Del Valle, Director, Foundation Retail; Bobby V, Director, Finance; Greg McCollough, Managing Director; Lucas Stocks, Director, Footwear; Tricia Beaty, Director, Apparel, Accessories and Trademark Goods; Denise Creamer, Operating Systems & Digital Sales; Jason Toney, Senior Manager, Community Connections and Special Events
History: Mike Cosentino launched Big Peach Running Company in Brookhaven, GA, in 2004. The company currently operates 13 stores in the metro Atlanta area, north Georgia and Florida. In January 2025, partners Dawn and Ric Ross opened the thirteenth Big Peach location — it is the first Black-owned running store in Georgia. The company also has Big Peach on Wheels, as well as an e-commerce site.
In Their Words: “We participate in a channel that is collectively committed to serving its respective and collective communities, while embracing and promoting a lifestyle that is wonderfully worth sharing. We have achieved some scale and influence that is a legitimate blessing and an equally appropriate level of responsibility. Moreover, we have assets like Big Peach On-Wheels, our Big Peach Ride & Run concept in two stores (Atlanta Bike Shop and Big Peach Ride + Run), title-sponsored events, a Leadership Team Retreat and our own screenprinting and embroidery operation.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This award visibly reflects that growth and precision can co-exist. We’ve opened three stores this year. Such a dramatic increase in responsibility correctly suggests the lack of focus that could materialize with the foundation that built our business. And though we’ve made it a priority for 2026 to ensure we also get ‘back to basics,’ this award represents that we can grow our business solidly while we continue to serve our communities completely.”
2026 Plans: “Big Peach has added more than a half-dozen new positions to its Store Management and Leadership Teams. In addition to pursuing our mission and growing our business, we are investing in our Guest Advocates in a manner that ensures the perennial opportunity for additional compensation and to further develop and contribute. Equally important, these positions will ensure that our service proposition remains the most popular reason our guests choose to visit and shop with us.”

charlotterunning.com
Key Personnel: Scott Dvorak, Founder/Owner. Owners: Donny Forsyth, Kamie Davis, Harry Chandler, Brad Popple
History: In the Summer of 2000, the Charlotte Running Company opened its doors in the historical Leeper-Wyatt Grocery store building in the South End District. It was initially a partnership between former professional distance runners Scott Dvorak and Eric Hichman (the latter departed the company in 2003). Dvorak opened a second store in South Charlotte in 2006. In 2009, Donny Forsyth joined CRC as the first brand partner with his purchase of the Promenade store from Dvorak. The CRC owners group expanded in 2011 with the addition of Todd Joefreda, who partnered with Dvorak to open both the Mooresville and Northlake stores in 2014. With the purchase of both the Northlake and Mooresville in 2016, Jamie Davis joined the ownership group. That same year, Dvorak and Forsythe partnered to open the Riverwalk location in Rock Hill, SC. In 2024, CRC opened a bigger and better Riverwalk store with a bar and outside patio. Meanwhile, Michigan native Harry Chandler moved to Charlotte to join the CLC team in 2016 and joined the ownership group in 2022. Finally, in 2023, CLC alum Brad Popple returned to join the ownership group.
In Their Words: “Charlotte Running Company is a leader in its community and in the running industry. Our continued growth is attributed to the culture and passion of our owners and employees. No matter the pace, distance or fitness level, everyone is welcome in our stores. Our employees make every customer feel like they belong and are part of the Charlotte Running Company family.”
What the Award Means to Them: “We cannot thank our running and fitness community enough for their support over the past 25 years. Receiving this award reinforces that we are doing things the right way by connecting with the Charlotte running community. Connecting with customers and community are the reasons why we come to work every day. Winning this award also gives us a chance to celebrate all the hard work that our staff puts in every day with every customer.”
2026 Plans: “Our focus in 2026 is to teach, grow and elevate our staff so they will take offering ‘exceptional customer service’ to the next level. We will do this by investing in staff members’ continuing education, training and opportunities to grow. We will also be partnering with several of our vendors to offer some exclusive colors and products to our customers throughout the year.”

charmcityrun.com
Key Personnel: Josh Levinson, Founder/CEO; Tom Mansfield, President/COO; Karma Quinn, CFO; Will Murdoch, VP/Director of Events; Lauren English, CMO; Brian Nusuta, VP/Footwear Buyer; Josh Pickett, VP/Director CCR3PO; Ben Pickett, General Manager; Deanthony White, Director of Brand Partnerships and Retail Activations; Kristen Watkins, Director of Visual Merchandising
History: Charm City Run was founded in 2002 by Josh Levinson in Timonium, MD, just outside of Baltimore City. The business currently operates seven retail stores and a robust events business that manages 150 races annually.
In Their Words: “We are a comprehensive running ecosystem. Charm City Run isn’t just a store — it’s a complete support system for active lifestyles. This includes expert shoe fittings, diverse training groups, events management and accessibility via multiple physical locations across Maryland and Delaware, plus the utilization of a mobile store to meet customers where they are — expos, hospitals and military bases. Our community involvement also features charity partnerships to actively raise funds and awareness for crucial local non-profits like the Baltimore Hinger Project, and Burgers & Bands for Suicide Prevention. The longevity of stores – notably the Bel Air location’s 20th anniversary and renovation – demonstrates a deep commitment to the neighborhoods we serve, ensuring we are always a central, welcoming hub for running and community.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This recognition is the ultimate indication that we are succeeding amongst a peer group that strives for excellence every day. We work hard to create a welcoming environment where runners and walkers of all levels feel supported, whether they’re buying their first pair of shoes or training for their next big race. The award is a meaningful way to affirm the passion and hard work our staff puts into serving the running community and reflects the strong relationships we’ve built with our customers. More than anything, it motivates us to keep raising the bar and continue inspiring people to run happy, healthy, and strong. Simply put, the product is absolutely everywhere, but our people are not.”
2026 Plans: “We are planning to complete our fourth store renovation with a significant refresh of our Columbia location, which opened in 2011. This renovation will provide a beautiful, welcoming space to the Howard County community just in time for our store’s 15th anniversary. Our belief is simple: If we offer premium product and the best people, our store environment should reflect that excellence. In 2026, we will also expand the reach of the Charm City Run Foundation. Guided by the core tenets of giving back to the environment, supporting education and opportunity and promoting health and wellness, our foundation’s first executive director will be tasked with extending our community reach and giving across Maryland and Delaware. Finally, while 2026 is about execution, we will also begin planning a big 2027 as we celebrate 25 years in business — a milestone that will mark two-and-a-half decades of inspiring the human spirit, one sole at a time.”

Alongside our run shops, we operate Ruthie’s Run as an Adirondack fashion/apparel brand and manage eight properties (three occupied by our stores, two additional commercial, two long-term residential and one Airbnb). What the Award Means to Them: “It’s a tremendous honor and one that our team doesn’t take lightly. This recognition validates the hard work, creativity and care our staff puts into every interaction. It’s also a shared win with our community — our customers take pride in knowing they support one of the top running stores in the country. It’s a constant reminder that what we do truly matters and is noticed.”
2026 Plans: “Let’s just say we’re building on incredible momentum. In 2025, our events and races saw record participation, reflecting a growing enthusiasm for running across our region. We’ll continue focusing on high-quality community events and innovative brand activations that connect more people to the joy of running — whether they’re seasoned athletes or just getting started.”
DASH SPORTS
One location each in Clermont and Winter Garden, FL
godashsports.com
Key Personnel: Kimberly Grogan, Owner
History: Since 2006, Dash Sports’ mission has been to help its customers achieve their fitness goals and experience an active lifestyle. Kimberly Grogan’s passion and expertise in retail and physical education inspired her to open Gear for MultiSport at the National Training Center in Clermont. In 2019, the company had the opportunity to expand downtown, which led to a rebrand and the formation of Dash Sports. Moving provided more retail space and the opportunity to grow in the community. In March 2025, a second location opened in Winter Garden, expanding the retailer’s footprint into Orange County/Orlando.
In Their Words: “Our uniqueness stems from our unwavering dedication to the custom shoe fitting experience, delivered by a staff that operates with genuine knowledge, care and energy (the WOW Factor). We refuse to let our customers compromise on fit — we go beyond the basic size to provide a comprehensive assessment that ensures the best shoe for their specific gait and health needs. As a sole-owner, single-mother-run business, our independence allows us to prioritize community and personal relationships over corporate mandates, making every customer interaction authentic and tailored. Furthermore, we intentionally stock a diverse range of supportive footwear—from running shoes like the Brooks Ghost Max 3 to fashionable orthopedic sandals and casual comfort shoes—proving we are a destination for the entire active lifestyle, not just race day.”
What the Award Means to Them: “Receiving the Best Running Stores Award is a profound honor and the highest form of validation for our team. It confirms that our decision to lead rather than follow – by always prioritizing personalized service over simply competing on price – is the right path forward in this industry. For me, as the owner, it acknowledges the courage and hard work it takes to expand a small business and stay true to its roots. For our staff, it recognizes their daily commitment to delivering the ‘WOW’ customer service that our community deserves, making this award truly a reflection of their dedication.”
2026 Plans: “Dash Sports plans to deepen our investment in community education and specialized services. This includes continuing our free weekly run/walk groups, increasing the frequency of our ‘Healthy Foot’ seminars in partnership with local orthopedic professionals and supporting other local races to help people Live Actively. Our focus will remain on elevating the quality and depth of our expert advice, ensuring we remain the trusted, fearlessly independent resource for every runner and walker in Central Florida.”

Fleet Feet Fort Wayne
Two locations in Fort Wayne, IN
fleetfeet.com/s/fortwayne
Key Personnel: Zachary Croy, Store Manager; Michael Conte, Store Manager; Maggie Schuck, Shoe Buyer/Marketing Consultant; Sara Miller, Training Programs Director/Coach; Kevin Croy, Owner/President; Jeanice Croy, Owner/CEO
History: Fleet Feet Fort Wayne was founded in August 2013. The store is located in the southwest region of Fort Wayne and Aboite Township, IN. Currently, there are two locations, both located in Fort Wayne. Jeanice Croy, Kevin Croy and Maggie Croy started Fleet Feet Fort Wayne 12 years ago, with one specific goal in mind — to build a locally owned running store in northeast Indiana that provided an inclusive fitness environment for all residents. They wanted to develop a store that engaged all northeast Indiana residents into the sport of running and fitness, no matter their level of ability. This in turn would help promote a healthier lifestyle within the community. The founders knew that, based on national surveys and publications, the City of Fort Wayne has always had the reputation of being one of the more unhealthy cities in the United States. From Day One Fleet Feet Fort Wayne set out to change all that by developing numerous training programs and events that specifically focused on the beginning runner or walker. The store’s staff and its owners make sure that they start each day with the thought process of, “How can we change someone’s life in a positive way and make it better?” and knowledgeable staff.
In Their Words: “We believe that what makes our store the most unique is our community outreach. In the past year, we have donated more than 200 pairs of shoes and socks to children in need at the Boys and Girls Club of America. We have also helped an organization called Blessings in a Backpack by helping put together over 200 ‘Brave Bags’ benefiting neglected or abused children in northeast Indiana. We have sponsored and donated to Girls on the Run of Northeast Indiana. As a result, the store has received numerous awards and recognition for its community efforts, including being selected as Best Running Store in America nine times in the past 11 years, YMCA Workplace Wellness Award, Recipient of Fleet Feet Fitlanthropy Grant, and Fort 4 Fitness Marathon/Half Marathon Business Volunteer Award.”
What the Award Means to Them: “We acknowledge that this award would not have been possible without the passion and dedication of our staff and the overwhelming support of the local Fort Wayne community. This award reaffirms that we are maintaining our commitment to our core values.”
2026 Plans: “We have plans to continue aggressive sales growth in northeast Indiana. We have plans to grow approximately 11 percent year-over-year by launching an aggressive workplace fit program and bringing the Fleet Feet shoe-fitting experience to major employers. We hope to tie in a charity donation piece with this workplace fit program. We will also be expanding our local charity platforms. We will now be adding a local shoe donation program to several other local community centers, such as the Rescue Mission and the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Again, we will fit and donate shoes to those in the community who are in need. Our goal is to hopefully fit and donate over 500-plus shoes in our second year of this program.”

In Their Words: “We are in one of the most diverse small cities in the United States. That provides us with the privilege of helping people from all walks of life, which is an opportunity we welcome, cherish and one that we do not take lightly.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This is an unbelievable honor for our team. This is the first year this location has ever received a nomination and we could not be more thankful. Our primary objective has always been to support our customers and community. To know that someone saw the value and care that we bring to our people and thought we were worthy of this distinction is a reminder that we are on the right track and to keep our focus.”

Fleet Feet Hartford
West Hartford, CT
fleetfeet.com/s/hartford
Key Personnel: Tommy O’Gorman, Sr. Manager; Scott Levine, Assistant Manager; Zach Rankin, Social Media and Marketing Manager; Max Jacobs, Inventory and E-commerce Manager; Mike Rieger, Training Program Manager
History: The store was originally founded in 1998 by Alice Gold as a women’s running store. Alice sold it to Stephanie Blozy (ZY Running) around 2010, who transformed it into a more dynamic and prominent run specialty store. David and Fernanda Jacobs bought the store in May 2023 and put a lot of energy into raising the store’s profile, creating a larger and more loyal running community and growing the store’s community engagement and philanthropy.
In Their Words: “There are two things that that really set us apart — our people and the extensive training they undergo and our community engagement. All of our personnel go through a detailed, three-day training seminar up front and then they shadow our outfitters. They are also schooled about our extensive community engagement. A good number of our outfitters are college runners, or ex-college runners, but we have outfitters that are middle-aged and up into their 70s. Additionally, the relationship we established with the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs of Hartford brings great benefits to the boys and girls. Nothing is more gratifying than seeing their faces light up when they get new running shoes and then we get to see them run in Donny’s Dash. Finally, we’ve furthered existing and developed new relationships with numerous high schools in the area, which results in our donating about 400 shoes a season from our library.
What the Award Means to Them: “Our staff was thrilled we won. It is recognition of all their hard work, listening to the customer and providing solutions. Fleet Feet Hartford is a real vehicle for bringing direct benefit to the community. We help the disadvantaged, we partner with worthy charities, we really make a difference and that’s a special feeling.”
2026 Plans: “Well, we’re not slowing down. We’re already planning to raise the bar with some of our existing charities, but what’s most exciting for us is that we will have a second store in 2026. This gives us an additional opportunity to mentor and grow our people, positively impact more communities, grow our running and walking communities and have more fun.”

Fleet Feet continues to prioritize its roots in the community and experiences, aiming to inspire the runner in everyone with collaborative efforts at events and training programs.”
What the Award Means to Them: “It means we’re doing something right — truly connecting with people in our community on a personal level. This recognition shows that when we pour into others, it can grow into something much bigger than ourselves. It means that every high five, every moment our staff went the extra mile (pun intended) and every time they chose to lift each other up — it all mattered. It reminds us that the energy, care and joy we bring to the sales floor doesn’t stop at the register. It ripples outward, strengthening our community, inspiring others and building something lasting, together. And that’s the real win, knowing we’re creating a legacy of impact, one person, one interaction, one connection at a time.”
2026 Plans: “We have several exciting initiatives planned to further engage with our community and strengthen our impact. We will be collaborating closely with our vendor partners to elevate the customer experience, both in-store and at events. Fleet Feet Montclair
Montclair, NJ
fleetfeet.com/s/montclair
Key Personnel: John and Dawn Fabbro, Owners; Leadership Team: Chelsea, Madeline and Emilia Fabbro, Paul Giuliano, Mary Spink, Bill Van Treuren, Axel Arroyo, Brenda Perez and Mike Spirko, backed by a dedicated staff of 24.

As it enters its 38th year, the team is proud of its progress and is excited for the future.
In Their Words: “We live by the belief that ‘Running Changes Everything’. For us, that’s not just a tagline — it’s a commitment. We’ve seen firsthand how running (and walking) can transform lives: by building confidence, improving health, creating community and opening doors. From race-day cheers to recovery support, from first 5Ks to lifelong running journeys — we’re there for it all. Our team strives to bring expertise, empathy, and energy into every interaction. And while we love shoes, what we really care about is the people wearing them. We also take seriously our responsibility to give back — through local charity partnerships, outreach efforts and continuous work to create inclusive spaces within the running world.”
What the Award Means to Them: “Being named one of the best in the run specialty industry is an incredible honor. It reflects the heart, hustle, and everyday excellence our team brings — not just to our store, but to the people and communities we’re proud to serve. Behind every stride is hard work, trust, and the courage to evolve. This year, that message carries even more weight. In July, a fire in our building resulted in the total loss of our inventory. It was a moment of shock and discouragement — but what followed was a wave of support, kindness and encouragement from our community and industry peers. That support reminded us why we do what we do. It kept us moving forward.”
2026 Plans: “We’re not just planning for another year in business — we’re planning for impact that lasts. Because owning a run specialty store – like running itself – may not always be a straight line, but it’s always worth the journey.”
Fleet Feet Nashville

History: The first location opened in Brentwood in February 2002. Adams became an employee in 2006 and then the owner in 2011. Fleet Feet Nashville now has six shops and a warehouse.
In Their Words: “Our team is passionate, patient, kind and knowledgeable — but I think those are hallmark traits of your typical run specialty employee. One unique initiative we have is our Community Collection. Our team designs Nashville-themed graphic apparel pieces and all the proceeds get donated back to our non-profit partners doing meaningful work in our community. Since we’ve started the effort, we’ve donated more than $160,000 locally.”
What the Award Means to Them: “There is always a spirited conversation around excellent stores that don’t make the list, so let’s be clear that the award isn’t the end-all be-all of success. That said, who doesn’t love being told you’re the ‘best’at something? Our team takes their work seriously, so it feels good to be recognized for that.”
2026 Plans: “What will matter in 2026 is what has always mattered to us — creating a next-level, personalized experience for our guests. The pressures we run up against though, have evolved and increased (distribution of our product, tariffs, rising cost, etc.), but challenges like these only reinforce why we must keep learning, expand our reach and grow alongside the community that built us.”

For their efforts to be recognized by receiving an award of this magnitude is truly incredible.”

Whether they’re serving local hospitals, practitioners, chiropractors, physical therapists or trainers, they are constantly building connections and ensuring that everyone knows they are seen, heard and deserve a happier day on their feet.
What the Award Means to Them: “When we found out we were named one of the Best Running Stores of 2025 we were overjoyed with a sense of pride and gratitude. To be named one of the best alongside some stores that we have looked up to for a long time is something that we will never forget. It really allowed us to realize that what we do day-to-day matters, that we have impact and that we can continue to change the run specialty world in all that we do. But it’s not the finish line. We promise to keep pushing, to never get complacent and to continue becoming all that our community deserves.”
2026 Plans: “We plan to continue growing our community, expanding our medical outreach program and finding new ways to innovate the retail experience. We already have six workplace fits scheduled and will keep creating a space where runners feel seen, appreciated and celebrated.”

This award really reflects the hard work they put in every day.”
2026 Plans: “We’re excited to double down on our commitment to creating a retail experience that truly stands out. Awards are an honor, but our goal has always been to be the best at what we do. We’ve also invested in a major store construction project designed to elevate our shoe fitting process and give customers an even more personalized experience. We’re focusing on strengthening accountability across our entire team, ensuring we’re aligned, consistent and ready for what’s next. By doing so, we’re setting the foundation to grow in a sustainable way and exploring the possibility of adding new locations in the future.”

History: The store was founded in 2006 to be the running store of the Roaring Fork Valley and the outdoor store for Carbondale, but it was immediately obvious that the Valley needed a running store, so we became known as the Valley’s running store and the rest is history.
In Their Words: “The thing that makes us stand out is our commitment to our fitting process. Each staff member is trained over weeks (not days) to make sure our customers get consistent fitting from all the staff. We also meet with doctors from the world-renowned Steadman Clinic at least twice per year to discuss feet, common running injuries, shoes and what we can do to best help our customers to get and stay healthy. We meet with local physical therapists, chiropractors and foot specialists, as well. The other thing that really stands out about our store is the very diverse and extensive selection of trail running shoes we carry. Being located in a classic Colorado mountain town, our store sells about 50 percent trail running shoes and 50 percent road shoes. I always like to joke that instead of having soccer moms come in to buy shoes, we have 50K moms — aka locals that want to run the most iconic trail in our area, the 4 Pass Loop (28 miles, 8500 feet of elevation).”
What the Award Means to Them: “My staff really values learning that all their hard work is noticed. Working the floor on a busy summer day with lots of stinky feet and some grumpy customers can be challenging at times (and rewarding), but knowing our staff is one of the best in the country creates a sense of pride. For me, this award has been more than I can articulate. It gives me a real sense of pride and is something I will remember as long as I live. I opened my store in 2006 with one employee and a lot of hope, so I’ve been working to make my store better and better for nearly 20 years with lots of ups and downs. Sometimes you wonder if you are doing a good job and if the customers and industry even know who you are and how much you care. To win this validates the hard work and is an acknowledgement that I have done some things right.”
2026 Plans: “I am excited for 2026. We are already planning to bring back our Ladies Night event that stopped during COVID and the store is looking to expand our signature trail race, the Mount Sopris Run-Off, to make it even bigger and better after nearly selling out last year. We are looking to get more involved in the biggest road race in the area, we are trying to add a downtown mile to the biggest event in town (Mountain Fair), and we have added a few exciting new brands and look to add to the success of our store and town logo gear.”
I RUN TEXAS
Three locations in San Antonio, TX: Stone Oak, Bitters, Dominion
iruntexas.com
Key Personnel: Garrett Sage, Owner
History: In the beginning, there was Michele and Mitch Allen, who loved running and each other (not necessarily in that order). The two met on the running trails in Dallas and got married in 2003. In 2009 they moved to San Antonio, where they opened iRun Texas at the Stone Oak location. Each having some 40 years of running experience, they shared that knowledge and passion with their customers, while providing a place for runners to connect. The Allens then opened a second iRun location at Bitters in 2012 and a third store in the Dominion area in 2015. In September 2023, Garrett Sage purchased iRun. His previous nine years of run specialty experience included leading all company-owned (non-franchised) Fleet Feet locations across the U.S.
JOHN’S RUN/WALK SHOP
Three locations in Lexington, KY
johnsrunwalkshop.com
Key Personnel: Melody Marshall, Owner; Matt Reno, Marketing and Events Director; Kellen Ague-Kneeland, Shoe Buyer; Eva Jackson, Race Director; Lisa Thomas, Floor Manager; Inventory Control: Jessica Cravens, Peter Brier
History: John’s Run/Walk Shop was founded in 1978 and its original location in downtown Lexington remains the flagship store. A second store is located in Lexington’s Palomar Centre and this fall a third store is opening in Lexington’s vibrant Hamburg area.
In Their Words: “John’s Run/Walk Shop strives to be an important part of Lexington’s local community. As a small, family-run business, we support central Kentucky as much as we can. We work with local vendors and support local causes such as University of Kentucky’s DanceBlue (which raises funds for pediatric cancer research) and Girls on the Run Central Kentucky. And we take part in initiatives to protect our local environment. We also operate John’s Bluegrass Racing Company, putting on multiple events throughout the year, from one milers to half marathons. We want to encourage healthy activity for people of all ages and fitness levels while supporting various local charities such as Special Olympics Kentucky. Further, our original goal in starting this racing arm of our business was to make racing better in Central Kentucky. In a saturated market where you can find a running event every weekend, we wanted to ensure that the local race calendar had races that people could count on to be unique, high-quality, professionally executed, and just plain fun.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This award is validation that the work we put into doing the right thing truly does matter. There are plenty of ways we could cut corners in the name of increasing profit, or just making things easier at the expense of quality. But cutting corners is not the John’s Run/Walk Shop way. We believe in paying fair wages, taking the time to fit customers in the absolute best shoes for their needs and goals, using environmentally sustainable business practices and doing the hard work of building a community around healthy activity. It often requires hard work and sacrifice, but doing the right thing is always worth it.”
2026 Plans: “Having opened a new location in November, a big focus of ours will be making that store as successful as possible. We’ll do that by building awareness and creating community in that section of Lexington as well as in the nearby counties. We’ve already been holding weekly group runs and monthly free 5Ks in our new area. We’ll continue to bring people of all ages and abilities together for these fun activities. But we’ll also be finding new ways to become part of the Hamburg community. We’ll be building partnerships with nearby businesses, including the nearby medical facilities, so that local healthcare workers can know there is a place where they and their patients can go for expert advice on shoes and insoles.”
MILL CITY RUNNING
Two locations: Minneapolis and Saint Paul, MN
millcityrunning.com
Key Personnel: Bekah and Jeff Metzdorff, Owners; Chelsea Kipp, Director of Retail; Luke Windholz, Product Line Manager; Andrea Haus, Community and Marketing Manager
History: Mill City Running opened in 2013 in NE Minneapolis and a second location opened in Saint Paul in 2020.
In Their Words: “Much of our success as a store begins with our local community. As we’ve grown, we’ve made it a priority to stay true to our values and keep our focus on the people who make it all possible. From the beginning we’ve built our business around a personalized, hands-on approach and that commitment remains at the heart of what we do. By continuing to think small, have fun and stay connected, we uphold the standard of excellence that keeps our community coming back time and again.”
What the Award Means to Them: “We are so incredibly proud to be among the Best Running Stores. It validates all the hard work that our staff puts in each and every day.”
2026 Plans: “We plan to bring in some new and interesting brands, continue to elevate our Saint Paul location and, of course, keep things weird.”
MOUNTAIN RUNNING COMPANY
Three North Carolina locations: Asheville, Black Mountain and Boone
mountainrunningcompany.com
Key Personnel: Bill Flanagan and Shaun Pope, Owners; Lauren Pope, Operations. Store Managers: Tim Altimari (Asheville), Brent Kennicott (Black Mountain), Joe Sheryak (Boone)
History: In 2015, owner Shaun Pope opened the Black Mountain shop as a franchise of Vertical Runner, a run specialty business in the Cleveland, OH, area (where he’s from and where he worked during college). In 2020, an opportunity for a second location came up in Boone, NC, so Pope took on Bill Flanagan as a business partner and co-owner. In the transition, they decided to go independent and Mountain Running Company was born. In 2021, MRC opened a third location in Asheville.
In Their Words: “We are a company founded by trail and ultra runners and in many ways geared toward those runners. Our trail shoe and gear selection is something that we pride ourselves on and that we believe sets us apart from a lot of other stores like us. That said, one of our big goals in our shops is to make any kind of walking/running/movement accessible to everyone who comes in the door, so we stock a wide variety of footwear to do our best to meet all of those needs. Additionally, we have built our MRC community through grassroots connection — lots of weekly group runs, big support of local races and trail work events, and honestly by just seeing our customers out there enjoying the same things that we love. We feel that this shared passion really runs deep in terms of local support for us and what we’re doing.”
What the Award Means to Them: “This award is an incredible recognition to earn and for us it means we’re on the right track. Seeing how proud our staff members were when we told them the news was further confirmation — they’ve bought into and believe in this as much as we do. Still, there is still so much more for us to learn and to improve down the road, so we’re very excited to have the opportunity to be at TRE this year and to brush elbows with other shops who have been where we are now.”
2026 Plans: “We are heading into 2026 really excited for what’s to come, even though we don’t have it all planned out yet. On a personal level, between our five full-time staff, we’ve had one wedding and one engagement this year, so next year should be pretty fun on that front. As a store, we have some fun virtual Strava competitions scheduled to help folks keep moving through the winter months, quite a few local races and events that we plan to support and we’re continuing to build momentum with our monthly ‘Café Raid’ series that takes our Sunday group run to different local coffee shops in the Asheville area.”

History: Now celebrating its 25th anniversary, Naperville Running Company was founded in downtown Naperville in 2000. The second store, NRC South, opened in 2014, followed by NRC Wheaton in in 2017.
In Their Words: “Our staff is what makes NRC unique. Our industry stresses how important our customer service is — it’s what makes run specialty special, right? We ensure we’re taking care of our employees just as much — the people who are working the floor and sitting at the fit bench for 10-40 hours per week. Whether it’s paying Naperville’s livable wage, staff perks, a fully stocked kitchen, profit sharing and 401K, or creating a fun, welcoming, hardworking culture, we want our employees to want to work retail and to make NRC just as special for them as it is for our customers.”
What the Award Means to Them: “Working retail isn’t easy, and we hold our employees to a high standard. To be able to invest back into them and receive this recognition from our community, who we care so deeply about, is the best compliment we can receive.”
2026 Plans: “We’re opening up a new store in 2026 in Downers Grove, a suburb about 10 miles east of Naperville.”

RUN FLAGSTAFF
Flagstaff, AZ
RunFlagstaff.com
Key Personnel: Sarah Sherry, Vince Sherry and Nick Arciniaga, Owners
History: Run Flagstaff was founded in 2005 by Sarah and Vince Sherry, two former collegiate athletes who moved to the running mecca of Flagstaff to chase their dreams of running professionally. True to their nature as dreamers, they brought Run Flagstaff to life, helping to strengthen and grow Flagstaff’s already historic and dedicated running culture. While Flagstaff’s running lore long predates the store, Run Flagstaff has played an honorable role in elevating the local running scene, supporting community events and outfitting some of the best runners in the world. Over the years, Run Flagstaff has also become a staple in the casual and occupational workspace, and has been voted as Flagstaff’s No.1 Shoe Store for several years running.
In Their Words: “Our shoe sales are roughly 60/40 trail to road, while the national average leans closer to 95/5 road to trail, a reflection of our environment and community. Our store sits in one of the most iconic running destinations in the country, a place where you can hit world-class trails, train along the famous Lake Mary Road or run laps on one of Flagstaff’s many tracks. Flagstaff offers all four seasons, endless sunshine and crisp, high-altitude air that attracts runners of every level. If you head out for a run, there is a high likelihood you will run into some of the athletes that many people only read about. And it’s a guarantee that at any time of the day you head out the door, you’re going to see someone you know, whether friend or family. Our store reflects that environment. It’s a space that celebrates the natural beauty, adventurous spirit and hard-working athletes that make this community so special.”
In Their Words: “This award is a meaningful acknowledgment of the work our team has poured into supporting and uplifting the Flagstaff running community. While no one here does this work for recognition, it’s incredibly rewarding to know that our efforts have made a local impact strong enough to be seen nationally. Flagstaff is a small city with a big heart — the kind of place where people show up for each other and want to see their neighbors succeed. This award is a reflection of that culture and the mutual support that fuels both our team and our community.”
2026 Plans: “In recent years, Run Flagstaff has undergone exciting growth and transformation. We’ve doubled our retail space, allowing us to offer a better shopping experience, expand our product selection and create room for new community events and staff spaces — including our own in-store gym, office and break area. Looking ahead to 2026, we’re focused on bringing new life and creativity to our expanded space. One of our favorite initiatives has been hosting brand pop-ups, most recently with Diadora, which transformed part of our store into an event and promotion hub. The success of that partnership sparked new inspiration and we’re now collaborating with more major brands to create immersive in-store experiences that connect directly with the Flagstaff running community.”
RUN HUB NORTHWEST
Eugene, OR
runhubnw.com
Key Personnel: Dustin and Kris Pearce, Owners; Lauren Moe, Senior Manager; Jack Matherly, Footwear Buyer
History: Owners Dustin and Kris Pearce opened Run Hub in 2015 after leaving a vibrant running community in St. Louis, MO. Their goal was to create a community-focused running store in Tracktown, USA. Run Hub now hosts a weekly community run and walk, monthly trail runs, beginner 5K training programs and a run club.
In Their Words: “Run Hub is unique because while we are located in a smaller city, our community connection is strong. We regularly see 50 to 75 people attending our weekly runs, scavenger hunt runs and brand-partnered events. Additionally, because we’re located in a historic running town, we are regularly involved in events like the Olympic Trials, USATF World Championships, Eugene Marathon and more.”
What the Award Means to Them: “The Best Running Stores award reaffirms to our staff that our efforts to go above and beyond what is expected are worth it. We take pride in providing an excellent customer experience and appreciate the acknowledgement that what we are doing is unique.”
2026 Plans: “We are looking to put on our fourth annual Gear Grants Pancake Run fundraiser for our shoe scholarship program. We intend to add a 15K distance to the 5K race and raise additional funds, so this event becomes our only annual fundraising event for the program. To date, we have given out 287 gear grants to local track and field and cross-country athletes in need. We are also improving our community run/walk experience by designating a community run captain, connecting new runners and walkers with someone in their pace range, identifying run/walk leaders with matching gear and giving folks access to our routes via QR code. Additionally, we continue to look for opportunities to expand our operation, both in a larger space in Eugene and potentially locations in other cities.”

RUNNER’S EDGE NY
Two New York locations: Farmingdale and Huntington
runnersedgeny.com
Key Personnel: Bob Cook and Sue Cook, Owners; Allison Cook Galante (daughter of owners), Apparel/Accessories Buyer/Social Media Marketing Manager; Paul Curtis, Store Manager of Farmingdale/Shoe Buyer; Griselle Delgado, Store Manager of Huntington/Shoe Buyer; Kaitlin Dello Iacano, Events Marketing Coordinator. Employees for 20 to 40 years: Gary Paperno, Nancy Cattabiani, Dave Frazer, Craig Gluf
History: The journey began in 1985 with the opening of the first store in the heart of Farmingdale Village, NY. Over time, after outgrowing the original location and relocating twice within Farmingdale to accommodate an expanding customer base, a second location opened in Huntington Village in April 2021.
In Their Words: “We are super excited to have just celebrated our 40th year in business this past April and we had an amazing celebration with a run and party. Being that we have been in business for 40 years, former high school athletes that have been our customers for decades are now bringing in their own children and it has truly been a full circle moment to see. This is a proud time for us because we believe we are delivering an impactful experience with the new generation so they will continue to keep coming back to shop with us. We also opened a second location in 2021, just as a major pandemic was ending. This was no easy feat, but we are so grateful that we were able to financially find a way to do so. We have been voted 11 times as the best sneaker store on Long Island, NY, in the Best of LI Program. We have a very special family feel to our store and we hope that we can maintain this for years to come.”
What the Award Means to Them: “We have been very honored to be among the top running retailers to win this award. We are very grateful and worked hard with our staff to implement the criteria to win this. We are so passionate about what we do and our customers help in this process. It is our goal to inspire everyone who walks through our doors to have the best experience possible. As a small, local company, we really try to do the best we can because today you can easily buy online. We have been an integral part of the running community on Long Island since 1985 and have been making a difference in our customers’ and teammates’ lives. Winning this award feels like we have been training for our own race and are finally receiving our own medal at a very special finish line.”
2026 Plans: “We plan to continue to grow by adding more new experiences to our group runs, making each event more unique and engaging for participants. Recently, we partnered with a yoga studio and a cycle studio in the community. As part of these collaborations, our runners were given the opportunity to attend a complimentary class at each location. This initiative allowed us to connect with local businesses and introduce our members to activities beyond running. By integrating unique experiences into our running events, we have created an atmosphere that excites our members and encourages ongoing participation. Offering something different at each group run helps keep the events fresh and motivates people to continue showing up week after week.”
